
Sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Sergio Vieira de Mello and
the other UN staff members who died or were injured in August 19, 2003 attack on
the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad.
On behalf of VIVAT International, the
Executive Team in New York would like to offer our sincere condolences to the
family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Sergio Vieira de Mello, the former High
Commissioner for Human Rights and the top United Nations envoy in Iraq, and the other UN staff members who died or
were injured in yesterday's attack on the United Nations headquarters in
Baghdad. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and on those who will carry on
their mission. The men and women who died were humanitarians on a mission of
peace and goodwill. We honor their devotion to their work and to the people of
Iraq. The mission of the UN must and
will continue. On behalf of the entire UN Family, the UN Staff Association, the
U.S. Fund for UNICEF, volunteers and friends of the UN have organized a candlelight
vigil Wednesday night at 7 pm outside of UN, New York. For details on this
