“The choices we make, or fail to make, today could result in breakdown or a breakthrough to a greener, better, safer future. The choice is ours to make.”
— Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres
The United Nations General Assembly held the two-day Summit of the Future on September 22-23, 2024. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described it as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity.” This Summit stems from the Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda proposal, which urges UN member states to address both current and future challenges with renewed vigor.
Today, humanity and nature face numerous threats: pandemics, nuclear tensions, AI advancements, climate change, and biodiversity loss. The Summit aims to confront these challenges through established frameworks and heightened global collaboration within the United Nations.
The UN has developed many global frameworks, including the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 2030 Agenda, the UNFCCC, the Paris Agreement, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda. The Summit of the Future seeks to advance shared goals by reaffirming the UN Charter, promoting cooperation, holding nations accountable to promises, addressing emerging challenges, and rebuilding global trust.
Outcome Documents
At the Summit’s opening on September 22, 2024, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the Pact for the Future, including its two annexes. This 61-page document consists of a Pact of the Future, a Global Digital Compact, and a Declaration for Future Generations. Organized into five primary chapters, it outlines 56 actionable commitments: (1) sustainable development and development financing, (2) international peace and security, (3) science, technology, innovation, and digital cooperation, (4) youth and future generations, and (5) transforming global governance. By adopting the Pact for the Future, world leaders have committed to collaborating for a better future for all.
Why Does the Summit of the Future Matter?
World leaders have made significant choices that may determine whether we face a global breakdown or a breakthrough for people and the planet. The Summit of the Future could become a landmark event if we care about our lives, our world, and future generations. Here are five key reasons why the Summit matters:
- Saving the SDGs
Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is faltering. The 2024 UN Secretary-General’s Progress Report on SDGs reveals that only 17% of the 135 SDG targets are on track to be achieved by 2030. The Summit is positioned as a final opportunity to rescue the SDGs by investing in developing countries, addressing global debt, and finding innovative funding solutions for green recovery, sustainable energy transitions, and climate action. It is about protecting our planet and creating millions of new jobs in clean energy, digital infrastructure, and sustainable industries. - A New Peace Agenda
Global tensions are escalating, with conflicts between and within states, the ever-present threat of nuclear war, terrorism, cyber warfare, and the militarization of outer space. The Summit proposed a new peace agenda that addresses these issues, calling for a collaborative, diplomatic approach to secure global stability. - Closing the Digital Divide and Promoting Digital Responsibility
As technology advances rapidly, society faces both opportunities and challenges. AI and digital currencies offer transformative potential but also pose risks, such as misinformation, digital inequality, and misuse of AI. The Summit introduced the Global Digital Compact (GDC), a set of shared principles aimed at governing the digital world equitably. The GDC promotes inclusive data governance, reducing digital divides and managing the risks of AI to ensure these technologies benefit everyone and drive progress responsibly. - Empowering Youth and Future Generations
With 1.9 billion young people worldwide, the next generation is at the forefront of climate activism and social justice. Yet, they are often excluded from critical global decisions. Young people today are questioning the world they will inherit and demanding a voice in shaping it. The Summit’s Declaration on Future Generations aims to protect the interests and needs of future generations by ensuring their perspectives are included in decision-making. - Transforming the Global Governance Model
Today’s governance frameworks struggle to address modern challenges such as AI, nuclear threats, and outer space conflicts. Our global governance structures, created for a post-World War II era, are increasingly outdated, unfair, and ineffective. For instance, the UN Security Council’s structure limits its ability to foster peace and equity, while global finance systems continue to favor wealthier countries, sidelining developing nations. The Summit called for reforms to make the UN Security Council more inclusive and to alter the veto powers of the five permanent members. Additionally, it emphasized restructuring the international financial system to grant equitable access to global financial resources, particularly for the most vulnerable nations.
The Summit of the Future has reinvigorated global hope and determination. The Pact for the Future aims to tackle 21st-century challenges head-on. Now, the responsibility lies with the 193 UN member states to act on the 56 commitments swiftly and collaboratively. Czech President Petr Pavel aptly remarked, “We must start at home.”
