A Journey of Learning, Collaboration, and Advocacy for the SDGs

Susan Mwangi

Participating in the 2024 Voluntary National Review (VNR) and High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) was a profound and transformative experience, deepening my understanding of global policy frameworks and expanding my professional network. Through my organization, the Comboni Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship (CASE)—a faith-based social enterprise under the Comboni Fathers in Nairobi, dedicated to community transformation through social entrepreneurship—I had the honor of being nominated to join the Justice Coalition of Religious (JCOR) network and represent CASE at the VNR.

This was my first experience attending such a significant global forum, and it proved both a privilege and an intensive learning journey. The preparation process, including training and an induction session facilitated by VIVAT, was invaluable. Under the dedicated guidance of Fr. Paul, I quickly absorbed the forum’s objectives and became eager to contribute actively. The JCOR Lab’s intensive training shed light on the intricacies of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the essential role that faith-based organizations play in these discussions. This training clarified the SDGs’ complex aspects, particularly underscoring the critical role of faith actors in advancing these global goals.

My personal interest in SDG 13 (Climate Action) allowed me to contribute meaningfully by illustrating how Laudato Si and the principles of creation care resonate within faith communities striving to protect the environment. This grounding was especially useful as I participated with VIVAT at other UN forums, such as the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and the UN Civil Society Organization (CSO) Conference. These events provided invaluable networking opportunities, enabling connections with like-minded professionals and organizations. Many contacts established during UNEA have since become collaborators, with continued engagement through subsequent meetings.

Key Takeaways

The sessions underscored the power of collaboration among faith-based organizations to amplify our impact. Faith actors hold a vital role in achieving the SDGs, though our contributions often go unrecognized due to challenges in sharing impact data. Strengthening data collection and dissemination emerged as a recurring theme, essential for effective advocacy.

One of the most profound insights I gained was the importance of amplifying the voices of the marginalized communities we serve, who often lack representation in global discussions. Those of us who attend forums like the HLPF bear a responsibility to return with newfound knowledge and advocate on behalf of these communities at the grassroots level. Collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including civil society organizations like the SDG Kenya Forum, underscored the value of broad partnerships. My participation in final meetings for the CSO report on SDGs under review highlighted the power of collective input in shaping policy discussions.

Lessons Learned

  • Start Early: Early preparation for the VNR, especially for those attending in person, is essential. Travel arrangements and logistical planning should be organized well in advance.
  • Strategic Stakeholder Alignment: Identifying and aligning with key stakeholders is crucial for achieving meaningful impact. Building a network of strategic partners enhances reach and effectiveness.

Acknowledgments

I am deeply grateful to the VIVAT Team for the invaluable opportunity and steadfast support, with special thanks to Fr. Paul and Sr. Marides for their encouragement. My sincere appreciation also goes to the JCoR Team for their training and guidance and to the Comboni Missionaries, especially Bro. Jonas and Bro. Alberto Parise, for their nomination and support. I am also thankful to Fr. Ian and other collaborators who accompanied me on this journey, making it both fulfilling and successful.

Looking ahead, I am excited to apply the lessons learned and to continue contributing to impactful initiatives within CASE and beyond. This experience has strengthened my commitment to championing environmental stewardship and the other SDGs, and I am eager to build on the foundation laid during the VNR process.
