From November 3–9, 2025, the SVD College in Rome served as a hub of inspiration and strategic planning for the Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Coordinators of the European Zone. Representatives from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands gathered to harmonize their efforts and strengthen their commitment to integral ecology and social advocacy.
Empowering Advocacy: The VIVAT Connection
A cornerstone of the meeting was an in-depth exploration of VIVAT International, our global advocacy network. Guided by resource persons from VIVAT Geneva and leadership from the SSpS, SVD, CSSp, and MCCJ congregations, participants revisited VIVAT’s mission of “bottom-up” advocacy.
The group highlighted a powerful case study from VIVAT Spain, which has successfully documented human rights violations since 2015. By presenting reports to the UN Universal Periodic Review, they have moved beyond traditional charity to challenge systemic injustices regarding migrant detention and refugee rights.
“Advocacy must go beyond charity; justice, empowerment, and systemic change are essential.” — Fr. Fabian Onyekachi Adindu, CSSp (VIVAT Geneva)
A Tapestry of European Solidarity
Provincial reports revealed a diverse yet unified response to the continent’s most pressing challenges. Key themes included:
- Migration and Integration: From Poland’s Fu Shenfu Migrant Centre to Italy’s collaboration with Caritas, the zone is actively providing legal aid, housing, and social integration.
- Combatting Xenophobia: Portugal and Germany reported on their ongoing efforts to counter rising discrimination and support the urban poor.
- Environmental Justice: Inspired by Laudato Si’, provinces in Austria and Hungary are leading climate activism and supporting marginalized Roma communities through ecological education and prayer.
Looking Ahead: The 2025–2028 Action Plan
The meeting culminated in the approval of the European Zone JPIC Action Plan. This roadmap for the next three years prioritizes:
- Concrete Action: Targeted support for migrants, minority groups, and victims of human trafficking.
- Formation & Communication: Enhanced training for members and better storytelling to share JPIC successes.
- Institutional Commitment: Deeper engagement with the Laudato Si’ Action Platform.
Closing Thoughts
In his final address, Fr. Richard Quadros, JPIC General Coordinator, reminded the assembly that JPIC is not merely a task, but the “prophetic dimension of our mission.” As the meeting closed, a spirit of hope filled the room, with Portugal announced as the host for the next gathering.
