Nairobi, Kenya – On May 11, 2024, the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) formation house in Langata hosted a pivotal meeting to revitalize VIVAT International in Kenya. The event was organized by Fr. Leon Ipoma SVD, JPIC Coordinator of the SVD Province of Kenya-Tanzania, and Sr. Marides Santos SSpS from VIVAT International’s New York office. Attendees included members from five out of seven VIVAT Member Congregations in Kenya: Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC) from Tanzania, Society of the Divine Word (SVD), Congregation of the Holy Spirit (CSSp), Comboni Missionary Sisters (CMS), and Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus (MCCJ). The Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary (MSHR) could not attend due to their centenary celebration on the same day, and the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) had a congregational event. The meeting’s primary objective was to reinvigorate VIVAT International’s presence in Kenya and enhance awareness among its members.
Sr. Marides underscored VIVAT International’s mission to advocate for the poor and marginalized. She highlighted the necessity of advocacy activities that promote human rights, justice, and the preservation of life, urging participants to collaborate closely with UN representatives.
During the meeting, Sr. Marides provided an overview of VIVAT International’s role in human rights advocacy. Participants learned about the organization’s significant presence at the United Nations, where it champions human dignity and rights. Through Sr. Marides’ detailed explanations, attendees better understood VIVAT International’s commitment to peace, justice, and the promotion of life for all creation.
The participants expressed profound gratitude for Sr. Marides’ insightful explanations, which included real-life examples of global suffering due to war, exploitation, and the killing of innocent people. She emphasized the need for reconciliation and the integration of charisms and spirituality in the quest for global justice and peace.
The meeting was characterized by engaging discussions and thought-provoking questions, prompting participants to consider ways to strengthen VIVAT International in Kenya and continue advocating for human rights. It was proposed that a workshop be held in Kenya in May or October of 2025, organized by the VIVAT International office.
The participants also appreciated Fr. Leon for his warm hospitality and accommodation. This meeting marked a significant step towards revitalizing VIVAT International in Kenya, renewing the commitment to advocate for the marginalized and promote justice and peace in a global context.
