The VIVAT Symposium, held on August 10, 2024, at Gansewinkel Hall, University of San Carlos Downtown Campus in Cebu City, offered a comprehensive exploration of VIVAT International’s structure, functions, and objectives. This event aimed to deepen understanding of VIVAT’s operations from the global level down to its national branches and local groups. A key focus was on fostering connections with advocacy and interest groups in Cebu and the broader Philippine South.
Organizers and Participants
The symposium was organized by VIVAT Philippine South, a coalition comprising the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS), and lay collaborators. The event drew a diverse audience of over 100 on-site participants and 34 online attendees. These included representatives from academia, civil society organizations (CSOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), local government units (LGUs), religious communities, and lay partners.
Highlights and Insights
The keynote speakers brought profound insights to the gathering.
- Sr. Maria Lourdes Santos, SSpS, a member of the VIVAT Team in New York, shared invaluable perspectives on VIVAT International’s role and operations, enhancing participants’ understanding of its global mission.
- Fr. Aureenhor Ian Capuyan Nercua, SVD, Chairperson of the VIVAT Philippine National Executive Team, provided additional context and direction for VIVAT’s initiatives in the Philippines.
Sectoral Workshops and Action Planning
The symposium’s interactive workshops were a highlight, allowing participants to discuss pressing issues affecting Visayas and Mindanao. These collaborative sessions identified key concerns that could be elevated to the United Nations through VIVAT International.
The event concluded with the formulation of a concrete action plan, setting clear goals for the next one to three years. This plan aims to strengthen VIVAT’s advocacy efforts and establish meaningful partnerships to address regional challenges effectively.
