Restoring Mobility to Migrant Survivors

Fr. Ricardo SVD

Migration is often a leap of faith—driven by desperation, shaped by courage, and fraught with danger. Across the Americas, thousands journey north each year, fleeing violence, poverty, and climate disruption. Many of them ride atop freight trains, known as La Bestia, clinging to hope as they cross perilous terrain.

But La Bestia is as deadly as it is symbolic. Migrants endure scorching heat, hunger, exhaustion, and the constant risk of falling from the moving train. Injuries are common. Some lose limbs. Few receive the help they need to recover.

For survivors, the struggle doesn’t end with the injury. Many are stranded, undocumented, and disabled—cut off from work, resources, and even basic mobility. The journey forward can feel impossible.

That’s where the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), Western Province, is stepping in.

Through the Electric Wheelchair Project, the SVDs are restoring movement—and dignity—to those whose lives were upended by the migrant journey. The project provides heavy-duty, all-terrain electric wheelchairs equipped with twin 250W motors, capable of traveling up to 20 miles. These aren’t just chairs—they’re lifelines, built to handle real-world conditions and reconnect people with independence.

One wheelchair has already been delivered. It’s a start—and a promise. With continued support and faith, the SVDs aim to grow this mission, reaching more survivors in Los Angeles and eventually extending help across borders.

This isn’t charity. It’s solidarity. It’s a stand for those who’ve endured the worst—and a commitment to helping them reclaim their future.
