The VIVAT Model UN Program Launches

Marides Santos SSpS

In celebration of VIVAT’s 25th anniversary, we are thrilled to announce the official launch of the VIVAT Model United Nations (MUN) Program. This initiative empowers the youth in our schools and communities to step into the shoes of global diplomats, tackling real-world challenges through the art of debate, diplomacy, and collaborative problem-solving.

More than just a simulation, this program serves as a formation pathway, bridging the gap between classroom learning and global advocacy. By aligning student leadership with VIVAT’s mission at the United Nations, we are preparing the next generation to champion justice, peace, and the integrity of creation.

Why MUN? Why Now?

As we reflect on 25 years of impact, we recognize that the future of advocacy lies in our youth. The VIVAT MUN program provides a formative space for students to:

  • Practice Respectful Dialogue: Engaging in evidence-based debate even when opinions differ.
  • Understand Global Systems: Gaining firsthand insight into UN processes and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Develop Radical Empathy: Representing diverse country perspectives to understand the complexities of international relations.
  • Foster Civic Engagement: Translating academic research into actionable advocacy.

The Journey So Far: From Vision to Action

The program has moved swiftly from concept to implementation through a structured rollout:

  1. Foundations (Spring): The VIVAT@25 committee established program pillars, prioritizing cultural inclusion and leveraging existing expertise within our network.
  2. The Formal Launch (Nov 17): Facilitators and school representatives gathered to kick off the first cohort cycle. This session introduced the six-month roadmap, focusing on research, drafting, and oral presentation.
  3. Active Implementation (December): Students have already transitioned into practical work—assigning committees, defining topics, and mastering “parliamentary procedure” for both moderated and unmoderated caucuses.

“By forming young leaders who can debate with dignity and build consensus, we renew our commitment to a more just world.”

Inside the Delegate Experience

Across our network, students are currently immersed in the “craft of diplomacy.” Their journey involves:

  • Researching committee topics that mirror actual UN agendas.
  • Drafting position papers from the perspective of their assigned nations.
  • Negotiating in “blocs” to co-author resolutions.
  • Defending proposals in simulated committee sessions to reach a consensus.

Looking Ahead

As our first cohort advances, VIVAT is committed to expanding this network by offering:

  • Resource Packs: Curated topic guides aligned with VIVAT’s core advocacy areas (Climate, Human Rights, etc.).
  • Inter-School Exchanges: Joint practice debates and regional showcases.
  • Impact Stories: Sharing student reflections to highlight personal and communal growth.

Join the Journey

We invite all schools, teachers, and youth leaders within the VIVAT network to get involved. Whether you are looking to train a facilitator, start a local club, or share your own MUN success stories, we want to hear from you.

Together, let’s empower our youth to build bridges for the next 25 years.
